How I worked out your figures:

  • Leaving it in cash: I assumed your bank pays on average 3.5% interest a year in a savings account. You may be getting more than this now, but this is the average savings account interest from the last 30 years. If you used a standard current account, I assumed a tiny 0.5% interest, and Premium Bonds were worked out at 2.5%.
  • Low Risk Investment: Worked out at 4.5% growth a year. This is a very cautious mix made up mostly of secure government and company loans (bonds), with just a small splash of company shares. Actual long-term data shows this kind of portfolio has achieved 4-5% per year.
  • Medium Risk Investment: Worked out at 6% growth a year. This is a balanced, middle-of-the-road 50/50 split between secure loans and company shares. Actual long-term figures suggest this kind of portfolio has achieved 6-7% per year.
  • High Risk Investment: Worked out at 7.5% growth a year. This puts 100% of your money into company shares to chase maximum growth. Real figures for this are often higher (8-10% per year) but I decided to use conservative figures to be on the safe side.
  • Why these are safe assumptions: To give you an idea of real life, a popular high-growth fund like the Vanguard LifeStrategy 100% Fund has actually made an average of roughly 10.2% growth every year since it started in 2011. I intentionally used 7.5% instead of 10.2% because it is always safer to under-promise and over-deliver.

The Important Legal Bit:

  • This calculator is just a helpful tool to show you how compound interest works. It is for educational purposes only and is not official financial advice.
  • Unlike a bank account, investments can go down as well as up. Your capital is at risk, meaning you could get back less money than you originally put in.
  • Just because the stock market has done brilliantly in the past does not completely guarantee it will do the exact same thing in the future.
